Join AES LA this month for a discussion with some of the world’s most successful mastering engineers for their thoughts on the subject. We will be discussing topics like the history of the medium and where it’s going, misconceptions of vinyl, and special considerations when you know you are mastering just for vinyl.
For what is expected to be a one billion dollar industry this year, vinyl has more than made a comeback - it’s absolutely thriving! Is it still the domain of hipsters, or has it finally become the last word on high quality for audiophiles? With vinyl being the impetus for phenomena such as Record Store Day and VinylMeNow.com, its popularity is just as big as ever. In January, Digital Music News reported that vinyl records have returned to 1991 level sales. Even Sony has started pressing records again after a 30-year hiatus. Although one billion accounts for about 6% of revenue of all recorded music revenues, it’s still nothing to sneeze at.
Bernie Grundman, owns quite possibly the most successful mastering studio of all time.He has personally mastered some of the industry's landmark recordings, such as: Carol King's Tapestry, Steely Dan's Aja, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Prince's Purple Rain, and Dr. Dre's The Chronic. Bernie’s studio is currently doing direct-to-disc cutting of musicians’ tracks as well - a hot topic in the industry now.
